How to get to IHRR
Referring to the University map. The Geography Department, which is on the Science Site, is no 40 and the IHRR building, where we are based, is a new extension, located towards the rear of the Geography building, ie towards no 12 on the map. The extension is faced with sandstone and quite distinctive in appearance; there is also a large sign outside which says ‘Institute of Hazard and Risk Research’ (former name). The Boardroom (room 224) is the first door on the right as you come through our main door and Dave Petley’s (Executive Director, IHRR) office (room 225) is the second on your right. Julie Dobson, the Research Administrator is next door (room 226). If visitors are coming to Seminar Room 010, come through the main door and then go through the second door on your left and down the stairs. Go straight ahead through the double doors and Seminar Room 010 is on your left. If visitors are coming to meeting rooms 315/318, come through the main door and go straight ahead along the corridor until you come to the 4th door on the left signed ‘Gordon Manley Room and offices’. Go up the stairs and turn left along the top corridor. 315 and 318 are about half way along on the left.
Car parking
Anybody visiting the University by car MUST display a car parking permit and visitors should request a permit in advance through their contact. Please note, that if a car parking permit is not requested in advance, it may not be possible to issue one on the day. The owner of any car NOT displaying a valid permit will be liable for a fine and the car may be clamped. Due to pedestrianisation of the Science Site, the only car park now accessible from the South Road entrance, which is the nearest to Geography, is the Physics car park. On entering the site from South Road, turn right to enter this car park. Should a space not be found, turn around and come back out of the site (as there is no through road), turn right and go down to the crossroads. Turn right and in a few hundred yards, turn right again into the other entrance onto the Science Site (Stockton Road) and drive through the barrier. Go up the hill towards the Mountjoy Research Centre (no 45 on the map) and where the road splits (the NHS Executive building, John Snow House, will be on the left) continue straight ahead. There is now a new 100 space car park on the left beyond John Snow House.
If a car parking permit needs to be collected first, then again with reference to the University map, the permit should be picked up from the Security Office in the Chemistry Building (red atrium, no 15 on the map) which is accessed from the Stockton Road entrance. Once a permit has been collected (details of car registration number and person the visitor is coming to see must be given), if visitors wish to try and find a space as close to Geography as possible, they should turn around and come back out of the site, turn left and then left again at the traffic lights to follow the instructions as above. Otherwise, continue up the road to the car park at Mountjoy.
Please note: A car parking permit does not guarantee a space, just the right to look for one.
