The Department of Earth Sciences is distributed between two main sites, Downing Site (the main teaching site) in the centre of town, and the Bullard Laboratories on Madingley Rise.

How to find us
Downing Site
The main teaching site (Downing Site) is in the centre of Cambridge (see map), and parking usually has to be booked in advance. Alternatively, public parking within 100m of the Department can be found in the Grande Arcade (formerly Lion Yard car park). Access to the main site by road is from Tennis Court Road. Approaches to the Department from the M11 motorway and other major routes can be found here. In view of the difficulty driving and parking in the centre of Cambridge the Park and Ride scheme might be useful to visitors coming for one day only.
Disabled Parking
A parking bay has been marked out in front of the South Wing Entrance for disabled visitors to theSedgwick Museum and the Department. This parking bay may also be used for able-bodied visitors, to ensure the full use of our parking facilities, but they must leave their car keys at Reception when they sign in, so their vehicles can be moved quickly should a disabled visitor require a parking space.
Bullard Laboratories
The Bullard Laboratories are located on Madingley Rise, off Madingley Road. They lie on the western side of Cambridge (see Bullard map).
From the south, take the Junction 13 exit from the M11, turning right towards Cambridge onto Madingley Road. There is a left-turn into Madingley Rise after 0.7 miles. See a map illustrating these directions.
From the north, take Junction 31 of the A14 which leads directly onto the A1307 towards Cambridge and Girton. Continue onto Huntingdon Road (A1307). On the outskirts of Cambridge take a right-turn into Storey’s Way until you reach Madingley Road. Turn right onto Madingley Road and take another right into Madingley Rise after about half a mile. See a map illustrating these directions. Parking is usually not a problem at Bullard Laboratories.
Godwin Laboratory
The Godwin Laboratory is now located within the main Department of Earth Sciences building on Downing Site. To access Downing Site, please follow the same directions and parking procedures as outlined above. Please contact Reception on your arrival.

From Heathrow Airport
The Cambridge bus departs from the Central Bus Station, Bus Stop 9, usually on the hour. The journey takes between 2hr 25min to 2hr 50min. Alternatively, by rail take the Picadilly underground line to Kings Cross Station London, where trains leave for Cambridge every half hour at 15 minutes past the hour and 45 minutes past the hour. The journey from Kings Cross takes just under an hour. Buses into Cambridge arrive at Parkside, on Parkers Piece, five minutes walk from the Department. The train station is a 10-15 minute walk to the main Department building.
From Stansted Airport
There is a direct train service which takes about 30 mins. Alternatively, National Express operates a bus service direct to Cambridge (50min), stopping at Parkside near the main Department building.
From Gatwick Airport
National Express buses travel from Cambridge approximately every two hours. Check the National Express website for exact times. Journey duration is typically between 3hrs 30min to 4hrs. Alternatively, take the train to Victoria Station London (30 minutes), take the underground to Kings Cross station, where trains leave for Cambridge at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour and the journey takes about 1 hour.
From Luton Airport
From Luton Airport, the best means of travelling to Cambridge is via a National Express bus. Travel time is 1hr 35min, arriving at Parkside near the main Department building.
